The Arizona Cancer Center (ACC) has been selected as one of six institutions to participate in a research consortium to assess the cancer preventative potential of new agents. According to UANews.org, the three-year study will be funded by a $42 million grant from the National Cancer Institute's Division of Cancer Prevention, with $7.5 million going to the ACC.
Principle investigator Dr. David Alberts and co-principle investigators Sherry Chow, Suzanne Stratton, and Dr. Linda Garland will be joined in the consortium by five other institutions: University of California-Irvine; Northwestern University; Mayo Clinic Foundation; University of Texas M. D. Cancer Center; and University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The consortium members will perform early phase clinical trials to assess the cancer prevention potential of a number of agents, including cyclooxygenase (cox) inhibitors, statins, tea polyphenols, and soy isoflavones.
